SING NO VICTIM SONG!
Rhonda went to bed after laying out her clothes for the next day’s date, which turned out to be great. They rode around in his car. They had lunch on the waterfront. They laughed. They talked. They exchanged telephone numbers, and he took her to the airport. All the way home, she tried not to work herself up into a frenzy. She forced her mind to think about other things. She tried to read. She promised herself she would not call first. A month later, she had not called. She didn’t have to call, because in another city, at another conference, she walked through the revolving door into the lobby of another hotel. When she looked over at the registration counter, he was standing there, registering in the same hotel, for the same conference she was about to attend. This time she walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around with shock, surprise, pleasure all over his face. Rhonda smiled. He spoke first, “Okay. Who are you? Who are you in my life?”
This was a divine union! There was no way either of them could resist being together after this series of divine chance meetings! We will use anything we can to convince ourselves that what we are doing is the right thing to do! Rhonda reflected on how quickly things moved after that. They called each other every day, two or three times a day, because they lived five states apart. They saw each other every two or three months, which helped the three and a half years to pass very quickly. He was nice. It was nice. When you have a lover who lives so far away, you believe him when he says he misses you every day. As a woman, it just makes you feel good to know that a man is going to call you, or that if you are having a problem you can pick up the phone and call a man. You must, however, be clear about what you want and what you are doing. Rhonda realized that she had stopped being clear and had started playing the game. The game of trying to hold on to another relationship that just didn’t click. A relationship that wasn’t giving her what she wanted.
Now she realized that instead of being patient, she had settled. She was frighteningly aware of the fact that he was nice, but she could not see them sharing Jell-O. She had convinced herself that since this was the one who had shown up, she would have to deal with it. In dealing with it, she had tried to make it work, knowing full well that it was not going to work. But, thank God, he wouldn’t commit. He was real clear that he wasn’t ready. He kept saying it. He had a million excuses, and although she hated to admit it even to herself, she had tried to convince him that he was ready.
